10 things to do around Buffelsdrift

If you love an active holiday, then the area surrounding Oudtshoorn and Buffelsdrift Game Reserve is perfect for you. Here’s our guide to favourite activities in the Klein Karoo area you just can't miss.

1. Ostriches, ostriches everywhere

Oudtshoorn isn’t called the ostrich capital for nothing! There’s tons of ostrich based activities open to you in the area. Why not head out to the Cango Ostrich Farm and have an entertaining day learning the unique world of an ostrich farm? There’s also Safari Ostritch Show Farm for you to visit nearby, too.

2. Explore the Cango Caves

You can’t make a trip to the Oudtshoorn area without stopping at the Cango Caves. Right at the head of the gorgeous Cango Valley, this spectacular limestone cave formation sprawls under the Swartberg Mountains, offering magnificent dripstone formations for you to enjoy.

3. Meet an elephant up close and personal

As part of Buffelsdrift Game Reserve’s ongoing work with elephant conservation, there are 3 human habituated elephants living on the reserve. Bulelo, Malaika and Jabari are all rescued orphans, unsuitable for full release into the wild, and so they instead lead happy lives on the reserve. Watch them being fed and cared for by reserve staff, and meet these gentle giants yourself too.

4. Visit ‘the Hell’

Gamkaskloof valley, near Prince Albert, is where a proud and strong farming community lived in near isolation for over a century. Only carrying their dried fruit and honey our along precarious roads by pack animal, the area is a fascinating glimpse into the history of South Africa and her farmers.

5. Sip a tasty wine

It often surprises visitors that the dry soils of the Klein Karoo can produce spectacular wines, but the area is in fact almost as well known for wines as the Cape! Karusa Vineyard nestles close to the reserve, in the tranquil village of Schoemanshoek. Sample their Mediterranean-styled wines, and be sure to try the Cap Classique too! Karusa is a family-operated vineyard.

6. The world’s smallest safari

Take a safari- in miniature! Meet the iconic African member of the mongoose family on Buffelsdrift Game Reserve unique meerkat safari. You’ll have a chance to see them emerge from their burrows and bask in the sun’s rays before heading out on a busy day learning and foraging.

7. Take in some history

The C.P Nel museum remains an area favourite, so take a break from all the action and have a stroll down memory lane instead. Don’t forget to visit the ostrich exhibit!

8. Take a hike

Swartberg Pass offers delightful hiking opportunities for those keen to work off some of the tasty food from the Buffelsdrift restaurant.

9. Dive with crocs

The Cango Wildlife Ranch offers a truly hair-raising way to get your adrenaline pumping. Take a cage diving experience to new levels- now with added crocs!

10. Experience the finer things in life

You’ve heard of the Cape Wine Route- now try the Oudtshoorn Art, Cheese, Chocolate and Liqueur route on for size! Spend a little time in the lap of luxury, and enjoy the spoils to be had along the route of these Oudtshoorn hot spots. The beautiful Klein Karoo is bustling with things to keep you entertained during your time here at Buffelsdrift Game Reserve, so why not get your reservation in place today?
