My experience on Buffelsdrift Game Lodge
I arrived on Buffelsdrift Monday 5th of February 2012 with no idea of what was waiting for me. I was met by beautiful scenery and very nice people. During my stay of two weeks I’ve been on game drives, worked and played with the elephants and the horses. I have learned a lot about the different animals and species and met a lot of nice and funny people, there’s never a dull moment with the staff! As a volunteer you get to know the elephants and horses on a different level than a visitor, which is a new and exciting experience for me! There is a lot to do in the area around Oudtshoorn. The staff has been driving around for me to do all I wanted, such as the Cango Caves and diving with crocodiles!
As a volunteer you eat from the restaurant, which has amazing food. I’ve been eating gourmet for lunch and dinner every day for two weeks! There has not been much of these last two weeks that actually feels like working, it reminds me more of a luxury vacation. I recommend volunteering at Buffelsdrift Game Lodge to anyone! I have had two awesome weeks here at Buffelsdrift. Thank you!

Buffelsdrift Safari
My kids were introduced to the concept of staying in a ‘tent’ for the very first time. I hope they don’t think that all tents are like this on the inside or they’ll be very disappointed. Inside the tents of Buffelsdrift are all the creature comforts one could ask for in a safari: air-conditioning, full-sized bed, bath, 2 basins, W/C, outdoor showers etc. There is even a special sink for washing your bottoms: perfect for me to wash my baby’s bottoms! My family enjoyed the refreshing change from our regular B&B stays and my son thought the person who thought of this was very ‘creative’. While there were no big cats to be spotted in this private reserve, we were happy to be able to spot the hippo sticking their heads out of the dam once in a while and springboks less than 50 meters away from our tent. One evening, while the buggy was sending us back to our tent from the restaurant, we saw a Kudu jumping across our tracks, barely missing our vehicle by inches. It was likely to have jumped over the fences surrounding the tents and main building. During the evening and morning safaris, we managed to find more springboks, nyala, impalas, water bucks, kudus, buffaloes, hares, oryx (from afar), giraffes, black wilderbeest, southern red bishops, mouse bird, etc. The guides were very friendly and informative and we were drive to some very scenic spots in the reserve and observed a stunning sunset. The elephant feeding was a highlight for my 6 year-old. We were able to spend half-an-hour with the 3 resident elephants all by ourselves: we were shown different ways of feeding the elephant, my son got to sit on the elephant, played football with them and we had hugs from the elephants. Only complaint from my son was that half-an-hour was too short he wanted to be there longer! As part of the package included Cango Caves and Ostrich Farm tour, we booked a time and the lady owner drove us to both destination the second morning. Both of these tours are highly recommended.
The restaurant is right next to the dam, which was teeming with geese, and we could eat and enjoy the scenary at the same time. Food was delicious and I had the irresistible Buffelsdrift salad twice for both lunches. Dinner was also beautifully prepared although they were very busy both nights we were there and some of the dishes took a little too long to be served and we noticed that guests who arrived later and gave orders than us got their food before we did.

We spent a weekend at Buffelsdrift and felt like we were royalty as we were treated so well. The accommodation is absolutely breathtaking, right by the water and very comfortable. Although they are “tents” they are def not the norm. Game drive with Elton was brilliant he was so informative and full of fun at the same time. Elephant experience was amazing we loved every minute. Food was different and tasty and yes big portions. Alogether a wonderful time and will definetely return – thanks to all !

We stopped in Oudtshoorn( unfortunately not in Buffelsdrift itself) and after a busy day out stopped at Buffelsdrift for a meal on a recommendation. That was the best decision we made on the whole 16 day holiday. From the moment we arrived we were made to feel immensely welcome (credit mostly to Danielia- not sure of the spelling of her name but wanted to give her credit as her customer service skills impressed us). The younger children were given fish food to feed the enormous fish. We were made to feel very special as we were given the best table in the restaurant on the decking right over the water. The food and service was fantastic and not pricey. The only complaint is that our meals were so big we couldn’t fit in any of the delicious sounding deserts. We felt very at home and ended the evening drinking hot chocolate next to a roaring fire (it was winter and dark!) We then booked a game drive for the next day and were again delighted as Dolf gave us a fantastic experience. We also loved being transported around in the golf buggies (to the car park etc). We were impressed too when we had an impromptu tour of the luxurious tents. As someone that doesn’t enjoy camping this is most definitely NOT camping. The tents are lovely with a view to die for. Graag wil ek vir jou en almal by die Lodge ‘baie dankie’ sê vir jul vriendelikheid en uitstekende diens verlede Vrydag. Die Olifantrit (en voer) was ‘n onvergeetlike ervaring en ekkannie wag om dit weer te doen nie. Jul het ons vriendelik ontvang, vreeslik welkom laat voel en my versoek om die olifante te voer tegemoet gekom. Ons waardeer dit opreg en ek vertel vir almal van die professionele en vriendlike diens wat ons by jul gekry het. Ons ervaring by jul restaurant was net so aangenaam gewees! Puik diens en die grootste porsies wat ek in ‘n lang tyd gesien het (hier in die Kaap is die mense maar skaam met kos). Ek en my man en my seun van 16 het op die 25/4/2011-27/4/2011 Buffelsdrift besoek.
Ek wil begin om vir u baie, baie geluk te wens met u personeel. Vanaf my bespreking met Hanneke tot die diens met die drankies en die ongelooflike glimlagte met die dames by die ontvangs.
Die ene Dirk wat ons na ons tent geneem het (ek wel nog nooit in tent gebly nie), maar dit was ‘n wonderlike ervaring. Die tente was skoon, pragtig en uniek.
Die gras, swembad en personeel alles perfek. Ek was al elf keer oorsee, en het dit nog nooit beleef nie. Ek het al n paar wildsplase besoek, u personeel se diens is net: perfek, uniek, FANTASTIES!!
Ek het my seun vir perdry bespreek, wat ‘n fantastiese ervaring. Die ene Apollis was so vriendelike en my seun het dit baie baie geniet. Hy is briljant.
U restaurant, die kos was perfek. U broodrolletjies-sjoe wat kan ek se. Voltruis-pate, dit was van die beste. Die kelners en almal op Buffelsdrift was ‘n belewenis.
Ek wil namens myself en my gesin u en u personeel baie, baie bedank vir ‘n ongelooflike vakansie.

To all the exceptionally nice, friendly and so attentive staff at Buffelsdrift Game Lodge, and especially to the best and nicest guides in the world: Steven, Ruan, Tim, Dolf, Elton and Appolis.
After a 2 days trip we are now safely back home in Germany and from the first minute leaving from Buffelsdrift we have been missing you all so much. We had exceptional and amazing 2 weeks with all of you and enjoyed every minute and now always have to revel in the memories of our bush safaris and all the awesome experiences we made in South Africa.
Thank you to all the friendly and attentive restaurant staff, we had exceptional meals and gained quite a bit of weight during our stay due to the excellent meals.
Thank you to all the friendly and attentive girls at the reception, you always have been prepared to listen to our requests and everything could be arranged to our full satisfaction.
And finally a big big word of thanks to all our guides:
Steven: We really miss you, you are such a nice and open guy and we had so much fun with you on the bush and horseback safaris, always really felt to be in good hands when we were on safari with you. Thank you for introducing us to the “small five” even when Dolf had more luck in discovering the “ant lion”…;-)…….Hope to stay in contact!
Ruan: Our “Mr. Night Drive”..;-) thank you very much for the opportunity to have this awesome experience with the bush safari at night, it was really amazing. Always enjoyed the drives with you.
Tim: Never had so much to laugh during a bush safari than with you and your funny stories about all your crazy adventures in so many places in Africa. You really are a crazy but nice guy and always good for a laugh! Stay the way you are!
Dolf: Unfortunately, we only had the one horseback safari with you but even this one was amazing. You found the “ant lion” and a scorpion for us and, I could not believe it, crawled into a porkupines’ hole to get us some quills! Crazy but great!!!
Elton: Thank you for a great bush safari and for lots of nice conversations.
Appolis: No one struggled so much so find the buffalos but you!! Thank you very very much for all your efforts and for the opportunity to see the buffalos in the end on our last day. It was an amazing experience!
Once again a big thank you to all of you guys for struggling to find the buffalos! Finally it was a success for all of us! We wish you all the best, take care and looking forward to seeing you all again. We will definitely come back and if all goes well maybe next March or April, we will see.
