Spending two weeks as a volunteer at Buffelsdrift Game Lodge in Oudtshoorn was a brilliant way to end my eight-week stay in South Africa. Despite it being the quiet season guest-wise, the work here has been really enjoyable…

Anyone for safari? By jeep? Horse? Elephant? These opportunities brought fantastic views of the lodge and surrounding hills and mountains, and of course many encounters with some incredible animals on the reserve! Each game drive was unique, but highlights for me were meeting the rhino, being surrounded by giraffes and spotting the shy mountain zebra. I’ve learnt so much about the plants and animals here, which I found really interesting. All of the guides really know their stuff!

But my favourite days were spent with the elephants; they are the most incredible, intelligent animals and it was a real privilege to work with them and learn so much from their guides.

All in all, my time here has been awesome – nicely relaxing compared to my six hectic weeks in Cape Town! I’ve met some great people, from the kitchen staff who dealt so well with my awkward dietary requirements to the housekeeping staff and guides who I shared a house with. Everyone is so friendly and welcoming, with lots of laughs along the way! Thank you to everyone who made my stay so enjoyable – I’m going to miss Klein Karoo and South Africa so much. May we meet again!
