A taste of the Karoo awaits you at Buffelsdrift

No South African experience would be complete without sampling some of the vibrant cuisines that keeps our tummies full and our hearts fuller. So if you’re looking for an African game lodge that doesn’t just offer service with a smile, but an authentic taste of African cuisine too, look no further than Buffelsdrift Game Reserve. Not only do we offer some of the best holiday packages in the Oudtshoorn area, but also a truly unique Bushveld taste experience in the pulsing heart of the Klein Karoo.

What is the food like at Buffelsdrift Game Reserve?

The Karoo is sometimes called the ‘breadbasket’ of South Africa, a homage to the amount of farm-fresh, delectable goodies the area grows. This might be a surprise, given our semi-arid surroundings, but there’s no end to the tasty treats you’ll find in the Karoo. That’s why the Buffelsdrift team decided to specialise in an al-la-carte menu of local, fresh produce that celebrates authentic Karoo cuisine. To complement this feast, we offer a wide range of award-winning wines from Route 62, SAs longest wine route. Klein Karoo wines offer (arguably) some of the most diverse wines in South Africa, with Route 62 itself stretching from Montagu to Outeniquas. Spectacular mountain ranges mean the vines benefit from fertile soil, and despite the dry conditions they thrive. Many of the local vineyards are able to run fully organic, in fact! The diversity of microclimates throughout the region means the Karoo can produce authentic tastes from dry wines and fortified wines right through to potstil brandies, each as delicious as the next. So whether you’re a white or red fan, love your port or long to sample a fantastic Muscadel, there’s something you’re sure to enjoy.

Does the restaurant serve breakfast?

Yes. You’ll be spoilt for choice with a delectable hot-and-cold buffet, so you’ll be able to customize your breakfast at Buffelsdrift to your exact tastes. Breakfast is served from 7am to 10am daily, after which we swap to our ala carte menu. Coffee, tea and cake is also available between 10am and 5pm daily, for those seeking a lighter lunch. We also offer light paninis, curries and salads for those not wanting an indulgent full meal.

I’m vegetarian. Am I welcome?

Absolutely! While South African cuisine can place an emphasis on meat- and the Oudtshoorn area is, in fact, known for its Ostrich- we at Buffelsdrift have taken special care to ensure a wide range of tasty vegetarian meals are available at the Buffelsdrift Restaurant, too. We’re proud to offer a tasty, balanced menu that provides everyone with a taste of the rich Karoo cuisines. Whether you’d like to sample farm-fresh ostrich pate, or dive into our giant mushroom and camembert parcels you’re sure to be wooed. From our full selection of flame-grilled meats, through our delicious mains to the sweet treats on our dessert menu, you’re sure to find your heart stolen by authentic Karoo tastes. No visit to Buffelsdrift luxury safari lodge would be complete without experiencing Karoo hospitality for yourself. Our restaurant offers authentic Karoo cuisine in a friendly environment, with views directly onto the game reserve’s 5ha watering hole. Why not come and try some of the best cuisine around, while turtles and hippos play in front of you?
