Volunteer with Buffelsdrift Game Lodge

Volunteer with Buffelsdrift Game Lodge- an exciting way to give back (and have fun too)

Do you dream of doing a little more than just enjoying Africa’s iconic wildlife as a tourist? Then volunteering at Buffelsdrift Game Lodge may well be the experience you are searching for! We’re proud to be part of a host of programs which assist in the rescue, rehabilitation and even captive care of vulnerable and at-risk animals- and you can be part of these critical process too. Whether you’re looking for a bright, positive way to spend a gap year, or just have a passion for conservation, this is the program for you.

Why does Buffelsdrift Game Reserve run volunteer programs?

Buffelsdrift aims to provide a haven and second chance for wildlife in need. Sometimes the needs of growing communities conflict with the wildlife around them. Helping to manage these tensions in a productive, growth-orientated way that supports man and wildlife both is part of our mission at the reserve. Through our volunteer wildlife conservation programs, you will help shape the future to be a brighter place. Are you passionate about conservation and the preservation of Africa’s diverse species? Then we want to meet you! Our volunteers come from all walks of life, from specialists with decades of experience in conservation to normal people who want to make a difference.

What does Buffelsdrift’s Volunteer program look like?

Malaria-free, gorgeous Oudtshoorn is a thriving hive for conservation and wildlife alike. We’re proud to call it our home- and it leaves us perfectly placed to continue to make a difference in the world and give back to the community. As a volunteer with our conservation programs, you will work with a qualified facilitator, and have a chance to experience all facets of the conservation process. You will learn to:

  • Identify the rich animal world around you
  • Recognise key animal behaviours
  • Discover what’s involved in rescue and rehabilitation
  • Work as a team with other passionate people
  • Assist in environmental enrichment through the creation of appropriate housing
  • Learn about natural diets through the preparation of species-appropriate foods
  • Participate in the monitoring of animal health and wellbeing
  • Join in on the controlled movement and relocation of animals
  • Care for young animals in a safe, appropriate manner

Our volunteer programs are open to anyone age 18 or older who wants to experience Africa’s animals (and their conservation) up close. The volunteer projects have a 2 week minimum stay, but you can join at any time and for any length of time through the year. You will be working through the program during the week, with weekends free for fun and play. Basic accommodation and hygiene facilities are provided, and volunteers will share three meals a day through their work in the program.

What conservation programs does Buffelsdrift run?

Buffelsdrift is a proud participant in a host of local conservation programs. Local populations are monitored and managed through the game census and use of camera traps. We also closely monitor the meerkat populations in our area. Through activities like data processing and bird identification, we also help local conservationists monitor the wildlife in our area. We work with habitat rehabilitation, as well as the FootPrint Project, to help further conservation efforts in the area.Come experience Africa for yourself- and leave the world a better place for future generations. Volunteer through Buffelsdrift Game Reserve, and have the experience of a lifetime, knowing you’re making a change in the world too. The experience of a lifetime awaits you.
