As a year that’s been difficult for many of us drifts to a strange close, there’s never been a better time to rejuvenate your spirits in a safe, secure landscape. Beautiful Oudtshoorn- and the scintillating secrets of Buffelsdrift Game Lodge- beckon you to come and unwind. Here’s just a few of the treats that await you!

Explore Oudtshoorn

Today Oudtshoorn is best known as the home of ostriches, thanks to the many farms in the area. Once used for feathers for fancy lady’s hats, today it’s a thriving industry encompassing everything from leather to meat and, yes, still feathers too! Situated in the heart of the Klein Karoo, and once looked down on as George’s parochial little neighbour, today it’s a haven of art and culture for the area. It’s a key part of the much-beloved Garden Route, and a popular holiday destination in its own right.

The call of the Cango Caves

No visit to the area is complete without dipping your toes in the remarkable Cango Caves. Named for a word meaning ‘a watered place between hills’, these ancient geographical features are one of the finest dripstone caverns in the world. Remarkable limestone features glitter in the magical, dark, subterranean world, reminding you of a time long before man’s presence here.

The bushmen of the area were the first to tentatively explore the caves, using them as temporary dwelling. They left behind the exceptional cave paintings you can still enjoy today, and a smattering of artifacts, but without reliable light sources they could not penetrate deep into the caves. Once European settlers reached the area, one of the remarkable caverns were explored- and for decades, that would be all. It was only as modern sonographic techniques (and safer cave exploration) came into play that the extent of the caves would be known.

The home of the Golden Camel Bird

Able to endureintense heat, they came to be seen as a symbol of justice in Ancient Egypt. They havebeen called everything from fallen angels to beasts of burden- but they remain criticallyimportant to this quaint, gorgeous town. From the unique biome greeted by the Cape floral kingdom to the soaring beauty of theSwartberg mountains, Oudtshoorn is a town like no other.
