Things to see and do in the Klein Karoo

Step foot on South African soil and you’ll immediately come to realise the ‘Klein Karoo’ holds a special place in everyone’s hearts. From our gorgeous location just outside Oudtshoorn, Buffelsdrift Game Reserve offers you the perfect ‘home base’ to enjoy everything this iconic corner of South Africa has to offer. Keep reading for just a taste of what awaits you, and you’ll soon understand why it’s the local’s favourite holiday spot.

Fun and play in the sun

Packed with attractions both natural and man-made, Oudtshoorn and the Klein Karoo are perhaps most famous for their ostrich farms, and several stellar examples lie just a stone’s throw from our doorstep. Why not make a detour to the Ostrich show farms and learn more about these fascinating birds while you are here?No trip to the area would be complete without a tour through the iconic Cango Caves, either. One of the largest limestone cave formations in the world, they were formed in the Precambrian layers of the Swartberg range, and stretch over 4 kilometres- although for your own safety visitors can only access a small portion of them. Be dazzled by spectacular calcite masterpieces created through centuries of gentle dripping water, with towering stalactites and stalagmites just perfect to frame a masterful selfie. If you’re a daring adventurer, don’t forget to stop by the Devil’s Chimney and crawl through the Devil’s Postbox to earn your stripes. The evocatively-named ‘Valley of the Ancients’ is also waiting for you to explore, and superlative wildlife experiences abound. Be sure to appreciate the littlest among us with a Meerkat Safari on the reserve! These tiny animals are becoming as sought after an experience as the Big 5, many of whom can be seen in the Karoo too. The Karoo Desert Botanical Gardens, Mountain Zebra National Park and Karoo National Park all remain big draws for visitors.

Add some colour to your day

If you are lucky enough to visit at the right time, there’s also a spectacular display from the local Namaqualand daisies to look forward to. These remarkable flowers spring into blazing life in a tapestry of burning colours. Gorgeous aloes cover ever mountainside. You can also soak in the quaint local culture in a variety of beautiful, sleepy farming towns waiting for you to explore. If you love to stay active, the area is perfect for you, with everything from 4x4 tours and quad biking through to hiking and mountain bike trails to enjoy. Take it to the max with crocodile cage experiences, and enjoy a taste of the finer things in life with succulent local wine and farm-fresh foods and festivals galore. The Klein Karoo is also famous as one of the absolute best areas for stargazing in South Africa, so be sure to schedule a little time away from your busy explorations to enjoy the sparkling vista unfolding above you as you snuggle together with some tasty cocoa. No matter where you roam in this special corner of the world, you’ll find action, adventure and luxury awaiting you. The team at Buffelsdrift Game Lodge look forward to welcoming you soon!
